We have had Kate for exactly 24 hours. It is hard to believe that our long wait is finally over. Several times over the past 24 hours we have asked ourselves this question, “Is she really ours?” And unequivocally the answer is “yes, she is ours.”
For the first 18 hours we were her legal guardians. But as of 10am today, as far as the Chinese officials (specifically the Jiangxi Provincial Adoption Affairs Center) are concerned, we are now her parents. We are now waiting on her Chinese passport to be issued (which will occur Friday). After that we fly to Guangzhou to finalize the U.S. Immigration paperwork and her American passport.
If we felt we stood out a bit in Beijing, which we did, we DEFINITELY stand out here. After our official appointments, everywhere we have gone today (a Super Wal-Mart, Pizza Hut, and Haagen-Das Ice Cream shop) have just stared at us – an American family walking around holding a Chinese baby. It has been a bit weird, but we are ok with it. In reality, we will get the same stares in America; people will just be a bit more discreet in their staring.
Kate has really warmed up to us today. She is smiling, laughing, moving around, sleeping, and eating well. She goes to Marti and me with equal ease. She doesn’t seem as apprehensive as last night. We praise the Lord for her good transition the past 24 hours. In fact, we praise the Lord for all His blessings throughout this whole adoption process.
congrats on your little sweetie! That feeling of awe and amazement will be with you for a very long time. I have been home for 20 months with my now 5 yr old daughter and everyday I still am amazed that she is her. that I flew for 24hrs one way to get her.I barely remember all the wait and paperwork. I believe we all receive the children we are meant to have...this will grow more noticeable as the time passes. She will do things that will remind you of family members without her having met each other. Good luck and enjoy each other... peace and happiness Bonnie
