Dear Friends and Family,
Although things seemingly move slowly here in Africa, one thing that moves forward without delay is the calendar. We have already turned the page on the calendar. Looking back, it is hard to imagine that so much took place in just a short month. But we once again praise God for His hand in our lives.
One of the the biggest highlights for the month was the conference we sponsored at A.K. University Hospital. The conference was titled Effective Healthcare Leadership Conference. My good friend Ken Hekman, a medical practice consultant, led the conference. Our expectations were surpassed on many fronts - we had over 100 people attend. 40 of these were medical students, the other 60 were evenly mixed with doctors, nurses, and administrators. Around 40 were from A.K. University. Some people flew in from Mombasa and Dar Es Salam. Over 40 were Muslim.
Ken did a great job talking about leadership principles. More importantly the sessions were full of clear Biblical priniciples. Ken, also a poet, shared poetry at the beginning of each session. They all clearly pointed to Christ. At the end of the conference, we took orders for his book of poetry - almost half that signed up for a copy were Muslim. Pray that God will use the testimony of that book to bring people to Christ.
During the conference, I had an opportunity to give a clear Christian testimony to audience as I shared why I went to Sri Lanka last year (it was a session on Servant Leadership). To be honest I was a bit scared as the audience had the Chair of Medicine, the Dean of the Residency programs, and the Chief Operating Officer - all of whom are Muslim. But God gave me the words to say and the courage to say them. The response was extremely positive and overwhelming. We look forward to seeing how God will use this conference to impact both the medical culture and the spiritual lives of those in attendance.
For those of you who follow college basketball, it is now March Madness time. We will have our own version of March madness - not a basketball schedule, but our own schedule. I picked up two American doctors yesterday. They will help out at the hosptial doing a lot of teaching in the ER and the Pediatric ER. We have some dear friends arriving next week for three days and we will take them on a one day safari. We also have a video team arriving later this month to film a documentary about our work. In the midst of this we are conducting a Trauma Course at the University hospital. We will train 32 doctors over 6 days. The course is intense for the students. It is intense for the coordinators as it requires a lot of manpower and logistical support. On top of all this, we are now less than a 100 days from returning to the U.S. for a short twelve week Home Mission Assignment. I still have to purchase the tickets.
Thanks again so much for your wonderful support - prayer, emotional, and financial. We truly have learned that it is the faithful friends and family back home who keep us lifted up before the throne of Glory that supplies us with our daily bread and strength.
Sustained in Him,
Tim
Praises
1. Praise God for the wonderfully successful Leadership Conference. Pray that it the beginning of raising up future leaders in Kenya, both medically and spiritually.
2. Praise God that our dossier for adoption is now on its way to China. We should have a "Log In Date" by the end of the month. It will then be another 7-10 months after that when a baby will be identified and referred to us for adoption.
3. Praise God for the opportunities to work with U.S. Medical Students and Residents. Pray that God will use us as examples that "ordinary folks" can be used to build God's Kingdom.
4. Praise God for our wonderful support team.
Petitions
1. Pray for our busy schedule this month. Pray that we will maintain good balance. Pray that we will be quick to ask forgiveness when we sin against one another.
2. Pray for the family of my softball coach here in Kenya. He died this week of a massive heart attack at the age of 59. He was going home in May to retire. Now he has gone home to Glory.
3. Pray for Marti as she starts to wind down the school year and prepares for the trip home this summer.
