Marti and I teach the 4-6 year old SS class at church half the time. It is a fun time. I have mentioned this class before. They truly are red and yellow, black and white (Indian, Asian, African, and American). But even more fun than that is their "free association" of thought when we are going through the lesson. For instance, today in class they following conversations were heard.
Marti: "Have any of you read the books that have a character named Flat Stanley? Our friends in American sent us this character, Flat Stanley, in the mail and wanted us to take some pictures of Flat Stanley doing some of the things that we do."
Child A: "Stanley? My sister had a lizard named Stanley."
Child B (brother to Child A): "Yeah, but we don't know where he is now. He is probably dead."
Or, when Marti was talking about Paul the Apostle teaching Timothy the Pastor, we heard this interchange.
Child A: "Paul? We have a man named Paul who works for us."
Child C: "Yeah. We have a video from Walt Disney and on it there is a big man who carries an axe. His name is Paul Bunyan."
So, in the course of a morning in Sunday School, it is not surprising to talk about Timothy, Paul, Eunice, Lois, Flat Stanley, a lizard named Stanley, or Paul Bunyan. Kids are funny.
