There are signs around the house that we are feeling more at home. This process has been jumpstarted with the arrival of our container last week. We know that not all missionaries have the opportunity (or luxury) to bring a container of personal effects, so the delay in receiving our shipment helped us to appreciate even more the blessings that a few touches from home can make.
For instance, last night was the first time in over 120 days that Marti and I slept in our own bed. Since September 1st we have either been in a hotel bed , a friends house bed , guest house bed, or two twin size foam mattresses on the floor bed. Although we would have liked to have set up our own mattress and box spring last week, we had to wait for the box spring to arrive this week. It seems a few items got left behind at customs and were (thankfully) delivered yesterday. It is amazing how nice it feels to roll out of bed and have to get "Down" off the mattress.
It also feels more like home in that I can drink my morning coffee or evening tea out of more than one coffee mug. I was glad that I bought a nice big coffee mug at Starbucks in London on our way here, but I am a bit tired of seeing the word London with the picture of Big Ben as I lift my beverage to my mouth. Now I can "choose" my mug. And I like that I have a choice!
Another sign that this feels more like home is that I can not get to Ben's bed to kiss him good night without having to gracefully dodge the expansive fort his has built out of his Lincoln Logs. This too arrived on the container and it is good to see that his creative juices are still flowing.
And finally another sign that we are at beginning to settle in at home is what we did the other night. After putting Sam to bed, Marti and I and the two older kids retired to the den. We had our reading chair, our sofa, and another chair in the room. We had our lamps plugged in and the stereo was playing some nice instrumental music. Then, we each curled up with a good book and spent the evening together reading different stories but enjoying the same activity together.on our furniture.in our home.
