Ever wonder what we actually go through to visit a church in another state? I'm glad you were wondering that, because that is what this post is going to be about.
After working in the ER Friday night, I slept for about 5 hours and got up around noon to grab a cup of coffee and take a quick shower. Marti had spent the morning packing overnight bags for herself and the children. After I packed the van, which is sort of getting used to making long trips, we took off for a church in North Carolina. We stopped to grab a bite to eat in Columbia (at Chik-fil-a, my favorite "fast food") before continuing the five hour drive.
On the way, the kids watched two videos - Gus and Toy Story 2. One of the best decisions we ever made when buying our mini-van was to install a VCR in it. I can't tell you how many sound tracks Marti and I have listened to. In fact, over Christmas, I actually watched Gus for the first time, even though I have heard the soundtrack about 3 or 4 times. Anyway, it really helps the time fly, but sometimes I would like to listen to a C.D. or the radio...oh well, maybe when they are older.
Anyway, since we were going to be near some friends that we hadn't seen in a while we arranged to meet them for supper in our destination city. Sam, who had his nap interrupted by our one o'clock departure, was not interested in them or the food. So, needless to say, the meal was rushed and the conversation done in spurts. Fortunately, the weather outside was nice, and there was a grassy area next to the parking lot. We finally got to "visit" while the kids played in the grass.
Then, after saying our good-byes, we headed to our hosts house. Fortunately, they had a detached guest house that we stayed in. Unfortunately, it was a one bedroom with a fold out couch. Poor Sam, without nap, and now two hours past his bedtime was in no mood to be convinced that it would be an adventure to sleep in the kitchen in a crib. Although not pleased last night about the arrangements last night, he was delighted this morning as the crib looked out a large window into the beautiful woods. He was especially delighted to see the dozen or so goats that the hosts had on their property.
Church went pretty well with people showing an interest in what God has called us to do. Sam, behaved himself and charmed them with his quick smile and curly hair. We were happy the church had a nursery!
After church, Sam took a nap in the guest house while lunch was prepared. The children finished first and were outside when Sarah ran back into the house hollering for "Mama!" It seems Sam decided his nap was over and that he would visit the goats. It also seemed that before he fell asleep that he didn't need any pants. So, after some quick hustle by one of the hosts children, the goats were "saved" from Sam. When asked "what were you doing Sam?" his answer was "I dunno!" Then when asked were his pants were he gave the same answer. You know, I think he probably was being truthful!
Anyway, travel home this evening has been uneventful. Sam has rested quietly. Sam makes the trips interesting and I wouldn't want it any other way.
